How this ranks
Matching is on topic tags against your description, then adjusted for two things most subreddit lists ignore.
- Promo tolerance. A two-million-member subreddit that bans self-promotion outright is worth less for an organic motion than a fifty-thousand-member one that welcomes it. When you select organic-only, restricted subs are weighted down. When you select ads, they are not — subreddit self-promotion rules do not apply to paid placements.
- Size, logarithmically. Bigger helps, but a subreddit ten times larger is not ten times more valuable. Precision usually beats reach on Reddit.
Listen-only is not worthless
Subreddits marked listen-only are frequently the ones where your buyers are most concentrated — r/sales, r/sysadmin, r/ProductManagement. You cannot post promotional content there, and you should still be present. Two reasons: it is the best free ICP research available, and roughly 24% of Perplexity's citations on commercial-intent queries come from Reddit, so the discussions happening there shape what AI assistants tell buyers about your category whether you participate or not.
Work five to eight, not twelve
The failure mode is spreading across every match and contributing meaningfully to none. Pick five to eight, comment genuinely for two or three weeks to build karma and familiarity, then post. An account that shows up only to promote is recognisable within a single post.

Why is a huge subreddit ranked below a small one?
Because promo tolerance is weighted when you select an organic motion. A large subreddit that removes every link is worth less than a small one where a genuine post survives.
Do subreddit promo rules apply to Reddit ads?
No. Paid placements are governed by Reddit's advertising policy, not individual subreddit rules — which is why the ranking changes when you switch mode.
How long before I post?
Two to three weeks of genuine commenting. It builds the karma that gets you past automod and the familiarity that stops your first post reading as a drive-by.
